The Dragon’s Child by Jenny Nimmo – Interview with My Son

When I mentioned to my seven-year-old son that people on my blog were interested in his thoughts about The Dragon’s Child he was so excited that he pestered me for days to put together a post. It was a pleasant surprise for me to say the least.

He has made huge strides in his reading over the past year, progressing from Bob Books like “Fox in the Box” to the Magic Tree House books and The Dragon’s Child. I’m so very proud of him and am thrilled with his new-found excitement for reading.

What follows is a transcript of our conversation (with some of the repetition of ideas edited out):

Tell me what the story is about:

Well it’s about this dragon that can’t fly and then he falls down because his wings are too small and his mother doesn’t see him fall and a kid gets him. While he was falling a bird caught him and made him have a safe landing.

What’s the kid’s name?

Manon. She takes care of the dragon. They’re good friends.

What happens to the dragon’s mom?

The dragon’s mom was on a quest while she was flying and you only see her in the beginning of the book.

What was the best part of the story?

The very end when the kid and the dragon were together and the dragon flied.

Was there a part of the story you didn’t like?

When they were trying to get the dragon out when he was trapped. It was boring because they were trying to think of something to get the dragon out.

Who do you think would like the story?

I think that second and third graders would probably like this story.

For those who want a more thorough description of the book, here’s what the publisher’s description says:

A magical dragon must learn to fly before it’s too late!

Dando the dragon child must learn to fly or else he’ll be left behind when his family moves to new caves. When he can’t, his mother offers to carry him on her back. But Dando gets lost along the journey and now must survive alone in a place where the dreadful Doggins lurk. Then an orphaned girl rescues him and offers to help him find his family. But is their friendship strong enough to keep them both safe?
