Last weekend I was at my in-laws’ house for a baby shower. My brother-in-law and his wife are expecting their first child and I’m so excited to see what it is going to be (they decided not to find out the sex of the baby until it’s born and the suspense is killing me).
My youngest son came down with a horrible cough and stayed home from school all but one day last week. I have heard that others at his school have been developing bronchitis and pneumonia, so I consider us fortunate that he is getting better without going that route.
I still tried to get the regular things done around the house and on my blog, but it threw me off my routine having him at home all week. I didn’t blame him at all for being stir-crazy after a week on the futon watching cartoons. (I wasn’t too happy though about the two cups of water that he dumped on the coffee table, evidently in protest of boredom. I had been upstairs for a few minutes and he took advantage. It was totally out of character for him.)
On the plus side, while he was resting he finished reading a 100+ page chapter book, The Dragon’s Child by Jenny Nimmo. He was so excited about receiving the newest book in the Magic Tree House series that he spent an hour on Friday finishing up The Dragon’s Child, his reason being that he couldn’t start the new one until he finished the book he was already reading. I’m all for encouraging extra reading time, so I wasn’t about to tell him that he could start the new one, on the off chance he’d never get back to The Dragon’s Child. Who knows, maybe his reading style is going to be reading just one book, start to finish before starting the next one.
On the reading front, I finished Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys and listened to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for the umpteenth time on audiobook while I was cleaning. (This article made me feel better about my rereading habits.)
Today I’ll be reading Little Princes by Conor Grennan. I read it and reviewed it last year, but am rereading it for the Indie Lit Awards in order to refresh my memory.
I’ve got two giveaways going on right now:
An Invisible Thread Giveaway(ends 3/4)
February Book Giveaway (ends 2/26)
And last week I reviewed:
A Long Long Sleep by Anna Sheehan
Enclave by Ann Aguirre

Wow, re-reading a book to refresh your memory, not that’s dedication

I’m glad your son is feeling better. When you mentioned his reading one book at a time I thought about my own reading habits. I didn’t start reading more than one at a time until I began my book blog (I’m not counting college). I hope the rest of the family manages to avoid getting his bug. The same one is going around my area right now.
I know just what you mean. At my kids’ ages, if they are home sick, they don’t require a lot of attention. They mostly just sleep. But still, I hate to leave them. And all kinds of crud have been going around. Hope you get lots read today…I need to read Little Princes.
Any chance your son would do a review for us? That would be so fun!
I’ll have to see if I can talk him into it.
It seems like it is the time of the year when everyone is sick!
A sick child all week does not sound like fun for so many reasons. You’ve got good books going this week. I loved Between Shades of Gray!
I’m glad your youngest is better – that water on the coffee table doesn’t sound like him at all. I’m with Jill – I think it would be fun if he would do a guest review for you.
Oh, having sick kids is always difficult…for them and for the parent (or grandparent!). Noah (age 9) was sick this week and I had him on Monday. He brought video games and watched TV a bit…no real issues, since it was only one day. That was it for me, and either his mother made other arrangements the next day or he improved. I was afraid to ask…lol
Bad nana!
I’ve noticed a sick “trend” on several blogs I’ve visited this morning. Maybe you’ll continue unscathed from here on out.
Here’s MY SUNDAY SALON POST
Reading one book at a time? I am sorry… that does not compute….LOL
Yay for you on the Harry Potter re-read, let no one ever question that! And also for Little Princes which I adored and am thrilled to see it up for an award!
Glad your son is feeling better. I am a read one book start to finish before starting another book reader, so maybe that is just his style too?
I hope your son continues to feel better. There’s a bunch of flus going around here too. Lately I’ve only been reading one book at a time although I used to read more. I can’t wait to read Between Shades of Gray.
Sick kids being home are the worst … it cramps your style and you feel bad for them and THEN, when they start feeling better, they get all bored and whiny. A lose-lose situation. Are you talking about Abe Lincoln At Last? If not, we missed one and I need to know!
Yes, it’s the Abe Lincoln one – he’s just started it and already wants to know when the next one releases.
I’m sorry to hear that your son has been sick, but I’m glad to hear he’s getting better. I hope you have a better week this week.
Sorry to hear your son is sick. We were fortunate so far, I have a 4yo and I can’t remember the last time he sneezed. We’ve had a lot of snow and really low temperatures so he spent most of his day inside. Extra crankiness.
You have quite a disciplined little reader! Wish I could read just one book at a time
When my kids were in grade school, I was a stay at home mom, so not even trying to work while they were home sick but even then it started to get old after a couple of days. You just can’t get anything done because you no sooner start doing something than they need you. Glad your son’s on the mend and didn’t get as sick as the other kids!
Your poor youngest son! I had bronchitis in sixth grade and it was miserable, so it’s good that your son’s avoided that. And congratulations to your brother-in-law and his wife! Have they picked out names?
The like Max for a boy or Madison for a girl.
Pneumonia is all over the place!! I think our mild winter has a lot to do with it. I’ve never seen so many kids/adults out with it this school year!!! I love it that your little guy wants to read!! Yay!
Hope everyone in your house stays healthy!!!
I hope your son continues to feel better! So many germs floating around this year. I loved Between Shades of Gray. It is one of those books that stays with you long after you finish it.
SO glad to hear your son is getting better. We have 2 baby showers in March — fun fun fun. We know “it’s a girl”…yay
I would be all for encouraging your sons reading style, but then it is how I read books, one at a time!
Sorry to hear your son was sick but I applaud him on his reading style! Good for him
Hope he feels better soon. I think re-reading is an excellent use of time. I never really used to re-read any books but I have re-read several this year (for thesis purposes) and it’s taught me that there is a lot more to be gleaned from good books on the second or third time through. My opinion on one book completely changed and I’m glad it did because the new perspective I got on it was far richer and rewarding than my initial impressions.
I’m so happy to red that your son is feeling better and didn’t get worse and go the bronchitis, pneumonia route. It was smart of you to keep him home all week. I hope nobody else in the family gets sick!
I’m looking forward to your thoughts on Between Shades of Gray. I loved Little Princes and I’m impressed by Conor Grennan’s dedication to the lost and abducted children in Nepal especially since it is a frustrating situation that looks like it will never end.
I hope you have a good week, Alyce.
