Saturday Snapshot – January 28

To participate in the Saturday Snapshot meme post a photo that you (or a friend or family member) have taken then leave a direct link to your post in the Mister Linky below. Photos can be old or new, and be of any subject as long as they are clean and appropriate for all eyes to see. How much detail you give in the caption is entirely up to you. Please don’t post random photos that you find online.

This is a photo from our day of snow the week before last. Occasionally birds will stop by to pick through the ashes underneath our grill (please try to ignore the fact that it’s January and our grill is still on the patio). I’ve tried to get photos of them before, but they fly away at the least sign of movement from indoors. I’m pretty sure this has something to do with our two cats leaping at full speed and blody-slamming into the window whenever the birds make an appearance.

I managed to get a photo of this little guy by hiding off to the side next to my computer and zooming in as much as possible. There is some blurriness because of moisture on the window. (Honestly it might have been mud from dog paws, but I’m going to pretend that it was just melting snow.)

Any ideas as to what kind of bird it is?

That is a male House Sparrow. They are curious little birds and check out everything.

I don’t find a grill on the patio in the snow to be unusual. I grill in the winter. But mine is a gas grill which is easier to light in the cold.

  2. Louise says:

When I lived in Canada in the 80s people would use their grills year round too. It was usually too cold to go outside, so they would put it outside their basement window and lean an arm out. It was pretty funny.

I like the picture of this little bird and your life sounds a lot like mine! Our grill is still on the patio too. Here’s Mine

  4. What a little cutie — great shot.

  5. trish says:

What a cute little fellow :) And, hey, grilling all year is the best! We do it even in the snow.

  6. Staci@LifeintheThumb says:

That is a great photo!! It reminds me that I should get some seed for my feeders!

  7. I wonder what they’re looking for in the ashes? We keep our grill out year round so I didn’t think anything of the fact that yours is out in January.

  8. I don’t even want to think about my patio…Ugh. The umbrella is still up over the patio table…and there are lots of leaves scattered about. Hmm, wouldn’t that make a fascinating photo? lol

Great shot. I’m glad someone else identified the bird, because I know very few names for the little creatures. But I enjoy seeing them! Thanks….

We live in Toronto and grill all year around. Hubby goes out on a Saturday night with a scotch and a cigar and his big winter coat!!

  10. Neat photo! I’m from Canada and we use to grill all year round too. I remember there being a foot of snow and my father would still go out in the yard to grill. In fact, I barbecued dinner last night! There’s no snow down here in southern Indiana right now, though.

  11. Kay says:

Me too – regarding the grill on the patio. Ours is permanently there. We just had hamburgers last night cooked on it. And, I was wondering the same thing as Kathy – what are the birds looking for? Seeds?

  12. Beautiful photo and a cute little bird! We should really put our bird feeder back up, but it’s hard to keep the squirrels out of it!

I saw a Saturday Snapshot post over at Bibliophile by the Sea and decided to join in the fun today!

  13. I love the sentence about “please ignore the grill”! Seriously, who takes theirs IN? That would be the more relevant question! :–)

  14. A cute little sparrow, I think? My grill is left on the patio and used year-round! :)

  15. Sandy says:

I know we do live in Florida, but grilling is something we do year-round. This little guy is CUTE. Maybe there are tiny bits of drippings down there or something!

  16. Alyce says:

It’s been so much fun reading everyone’s grilling in winter stories! We usually put our grill in the garage or in the shed for the winter because we get such heavy rains (and it’s been blown over in the wind more than once in past winters). We just haven’t put it away this winter. We don’t grill in the winter because of the weather, although that doesn’t seem like much of an excuse anymore after reading everyone’s comments!

    Hi Alyce,
Beautiful snapshot! I love watching the birds at our place. Have a great day!

  18. Oh he is so cute! I will ignore your grill on the patio if you will ignore my fire pit sitting in the snow besides our back deck….LOL

In my defense, when we had a fire in January for book club – there was no snow at that time.

  19. Jenners says:

Hmmm…so now you want me to ignore both the grill in January and mud from dog paws!?? Too much I say, too much!

  20. Nise' says:

We shovel a path to our grill and use it all winter!

  21. Debbie says:

I love birds…he is cute. And…who doesn’t have a BBQ grill on their patio in the middle of winter? LOL– BBQ in the snow is my favorite!!

I love this idea, and I just signed Mr. Linky with my entry. Loved your description of the cats body-slamming the window! In our house the cat will claw frantically at the sliding door anytime she believes she should be outside (or inside) – and it’s almost always the very moment I shut the door. I do not understand the cat mind.

  24. Marie says:

Nice shot! I can see that others have already identified him for you. We used to have lots of these guys when we lived in the city. Now, we just get the occasional one. As for grilling in the winter, we’ve only done it a few times. It takes longer because the cold weather here cools down the BBQ too much. Some great weather is on the way, so maybe we will do some this week.

By the way, I had a few problems visiting the other blogs the last two weeks. About 5 Blogger blogs came up as a blank page…the same 5 both weeks. I haven’t visited any this week yet. I was using IE9. I switched browsers (Chrome) to see them and all was fine. I know this has nothing to do with you, Alyce. I’m only mentioning it in case others have had the same problem.

  25. blodeuedd says:

I love that you managed to take a pic :D That is something I have always wanted when they come to our balcony.

  26. Lisa says:

Why, it’s a little brown bird, of course! My cousin is an avid birdwatcher, but that’s as close as I can get to identifying it. Great shot!

  27. What a great snapshot!
I was going to say it’s a sparrow, but I see lots of other people have beaten me to it :p

  28. Belle Wong says:

When we were living in a house, we had our grill outside year-round too. I can just picture your cats doing their bodyslams against the window!

  29. irene says:

great photos. and I’m ignoring the pit in January.

  30. Cute bird photo, though I’ve no idea what kind of bird it is :-)

  31. Naila Moon says:

I am new to your linky. Love the little birds. We used to call them snow birds but I know they aren’t.
    Peace…Naila Moon
