This week I thought I’d go in a different direction and share one of my cooking attempts. This is a peach cobbler that I turned into an upside-down cake.
The key to success with this recipe (at least for me) is NOT to talk on the phone while preparing it.
Unfortunately flipping it upside down was not enough to distract from the fact that I added five tablespoons of baking powder instead of four teaspoons. (I lost count while talking to my dad on the phone and then realized I had used the wrong spoon shortly thereafter.)
Surprisingly most of it got eaten, because in our house even a strange-flavored dessert is better than no dessert at all. Although now that I think about it, I did double the entire recipe, but forgot to double the amount of baking powder (I just realized this now as I’m typing this post). In other words, had I remembered to double the amount I would have wrongly added eight tablespoons to the recipe. So I guess it really could have been much worse.
The lesson learned from this? Always write down what the amounts are when you double the recipe – don’t just rely on mental math, especially if you’re on the phone.
You want to know what the really scary thing is? Desserts are what I’m best at cooking.
If you’re interested in the original (and very tasty) recipe you can find it at Confabulation in the Kitchen. The original recipe is for a blueberry cobbler, but I have adapted it successfully for peaches in the past (those times when I’m not on the phone).

Man, oh, man. I am all about dessert, strangely flavored or not. An an upside-down peach cobbler? Yep. You can definitely sign me up for that
It was okay, but I’ve made it before with the correct ingredients and it’s much better.
My hubby LOVES anything with peaches! I’ll have to make this for him.
I hope yours turns out better than mine did!
I did one better. I made a cake for Jim’s birthday yesterday, and was too impatient to wait for it too cool, so I tried to flip it out of the pan while still hot, and it came tumbling out in great chunks all over the floor…. Now personally, I myself would have invoked the “fifteen second rule” and put it right back up on the counter and into a bowl, but it turned out that I was also impatient in taking it out of the oven, and half of it was still raw! It was an awful mess! Needless to say, I had to go out to the grocery store and get an already-made cake! And my lesson was: patience is a virtue! :–)
Jill that is just too funny! I’ve taken one out of the pan when it’s too hot and had it fall apart before, but never raw in the middle. What a great story you have to tell now!
It’ a good thing I’ve taken my lunch. I looks delicious. You can also take it as an experiment too that this such and such portion will give this kind of result. ☺
Doesn’t it look good? Too bad the cake part had a bitter taste – we ate it anyway though.
I think it looks fab. Bet it smelt good too. You just need to claim that you were making a peach upside down cake from the start. It looks like one of those apple and cinammon old fashioned morning tea cakes. And pour a bit of custard over the top, noone would know any difference. I’m sure that’s why custard was invented- for hiding slight errors.
I was hoping the peaches on top would distract from the weird cake taste.
It was light and fluffy though with all that baking powder!
I’d definitely eat that peach cobbler. I’m not good at making deserts but I like to eat them. And when I do try a desert and it comes out weird I take it to work… they eat anything.
I think one of the reasons I’m okay at making desserts is that I’ve been willing to eat so many trials and failures over the years – I do have a sweet tooth!

Same here. Weird looking/tasting desserts work for me!!!
I still think it looks better than it tasted. Made correctly it’s yummy though.

I’m full of admiration that you can make a cake and talk on the phone at the same time! And it looks tasty anyway, sometimes cooking by inspiration works well.
There are a few recipes that I have made enough times that I feel comfortable not paying as much attention – this obviously can no longer be one of them.
You know, I bet with a scoop of ice cream or some whipped cream, it’s just perfect. That upside down idea is interesting anyway. Why isn’t there peach upside down cake? There should be!
It wasn’t so bad, but there was a bitter taste from the extra baking powder.
I looks yummy Alyce. I love your honesty even when it might be painful to share LOL
Dessert is the best part of any mean for us as well:)
My husband is the one who cooks wonderful savory dishes. My cooking is very basic when it comes to dinners – which is why when we invite people over it’s always to a restaurant.
Wow, does that look delish!
Thanks!
Your dessert looked tasty anyway. I’m a pretty good baker, but I haven’t baked all summer, and now I have no excuse since the temperature has dropped drastically.
I’m trying to use up all of the frozen produce (peaches and apples) from last fall before they get too old to use.

Oh my goodness! That looks absolutely delicious.
Well honestly it did look better than it tasted. Makes me wonder about some of the meals on those cooking shows that look so good.
It looks really good! Luckily it was baking powder and not baking soda, I have made that mistake only once.
Sadly it did have a bitter taste, but I can’t imagine how much worse it would have been with baking soda.
One time I made pancakes from scratch and added baking soda instead of baking powder, they were the most bitter pancakes I’ve ever tasted and my kids still ate them when my husband and I couldn’t choke them down. They didn’t eat as many as usual but that day haunts me every time I go to measure, I double check the soda and the powder in the recipe multiple times befor adding it!
This cake was bitter, but not so bad that we couldn’t eat it. I was just counting and talking to my dad – counted all the way up to 5 and said, “Oops.” thinking I had added one too many, then looked at the spoon and realized it was an even bigger mistake.
You are very creative to turn “mistakes” into something that looks so delicious! I am not confident enough in the kitchen to do anything else while cooking…especially since I don’t cook that often anymore, so it requires my full attention. It kind of makes me crazy, actually, which is why I try to avoid it whenever I can! LOL
I love making desserts, but am intimidated by dinner on a regular basis.
It couldn’t have been too bad if everyone ate it!
I think the super sweet peaches helped to cover the slight bitter taste of the cake.
I’m pretty decent at cooking but baking is a whole different issue. Still, I would eat this. It looks good! In this house, cakes are purchased from Publix.
We always buy birthday cakes and make other cakes from a box, but I love making fruit desserts from scratch. I think growing up next to an orchard and cooking with fruit from a young age has a lot to do with it.
Looks delicious.
have a great weekend.
Hopefully will be back with Sat Snapshot by next weekend
carol
Thanks.
Getting distracted while baking is something I do pretty well! I bet it is still delicious
I haven’t been that distracted while cooking in a long time. It was really just okay.
Alyce, your peach cobbler, upside down OR rightside up, has my undivided attention right now.
Mostly because:
a) I am NOT on the phone being distracted, and
b) I LOVE peaches. They are my favorite fruit right now.
So I can’t imagine how good this thing tasted. I want some with my coffee right now… mmmmmm…..
Well the peaches were tasty at least!
My husband is drooling over my shoulder looking at your photos! Perfect time of the year for that right now.
I agree, it is the perfect time of year for it.
Ohhh, my. Cobbler sounds (and looks!) scrumptious.
Thank you!
That looks delicious!
Looks can be deceiving, but thanks!
Any baked goods that involve peaches sounds good in my book, mistakes and all! I never thought of making an upside down cake with fruit other than pineapple. No one likes pineapple here but me but peach upside cake they would eat! I’ll be sure to stay off the phone when I give it a try!
I love pineapple upside down cake, but I’m not sure anyone else in my family would like it.
That’s an interesting idea for a cake. My parents usually have loads of peaches from their trees, and one can only eat so much cobbler. Will have to pass it along
I think anything with peaches is good….no matter how many tbsps of baking powder you put in it =)
Any dessert is good in my books. Looks marvellous.
It looks absolutely yummy! And since you double the recipe that must have helped it not taste too strange.
I guess I’m not the only one who manage to mess up even fairly uncomplicated recipes. It looks good though
Your guys are troopers! Mine would’ve ate it too!
Too funny! I know for a fact that I can’t multitask like that so I don’t think this would happen to me. Of course, I would have things turn out wrong … but not because of talking on the phone!
Ha! Too funny! Thanks so much for sharing your cooking mishap with us!
