Mahai’ula Beach north of Kona on the big island.
Makalawena Beach
In the guidebook it says that Mahai’ula beach and Makalawena beach are beautiful, idyllic, and mostly deserted. In that they were right. What they don’t tell you is that you have to drive on an insanely deteriorated road in order to get to them. The road is cut through a field of old lava and is more pot holes than anything else. If you are going to take the road out to this beach you should rent a jeep or something with four wheel drive. I think I can honestly say it was the worst road I’ve ever been on – sadly I don’t have any photos of it. I was too busy grasping the seat and the door and praying that our car would make it over the road safely.

Alyce, those trees are so odd looking. It’s a beautiful beach, but windy I guess. I’m assuming that’s how the trees got that look, almost like growing sideways out of the sand. I can only imagine that road! LOL
Hawaiian beaches look lovely. I enjoy those out of the way spots, the bone shaking to get there is part of the adventure isn’t it? Not fun at the time though.
Gosh those are beautiful enough to be postcards! I’m sure that road was very, er, character building.
Sounds like a crazy trip to get there but looks like it was worth it!

Beautiful – maybe if the access was improved it wouldn’t be such a beautiful place any more with more visitors.
It always seems to be the crazy parts of a trip or the things that didn’t go right that I recount, sometimes fondly, when I talk about my travels. I cannot wait to visit Hawaii, just need to wait until the little one gets a little older.
The road may have been a hazard, but it looks like the end result was worth it. Those photos are gorgeous!
Makes your local potholes seem not that bad I suspect! Beautiful shots Alyce.
look at that crystal clear water — I want to go right now!!
So glad you braved the road to get those amazing shots!
Gorgeous shots! Too bad about the horrible road. I guess we have to face obstacles to find the beautiful things in life…or some such nonsense!
Thanks for sharing, and for the advice about taking a jeep.
Gorgeous photos!!
I’ve always wanted to visit Hawaii. Today, especially, after a long run, I feel the need to lie on that beach and listen to the waves.
On the beach is where I would like to be this weekend , like I was last weekend. Mind u it was a UK beach not exotic at all.

I am so jealous! These pictures are amazing and make me want to rent a jeep and head to the beach.
These photos are giving me a serious case of wanderlust.
The final destination was well worth the ride! That is a gorgeous beach!
Great pictures!
I found my way here via Margaret’s book site. My posting is not strictly this Saturday – But it is recent.
Your volcanic rocks remind me of Icelandic terrain, but the sea looks warmer.

My in-laws told me about the bumpy road when they visited Hawaii … but they didn’t say the end result was so beautiful. We were busy laughing at their story about the ride and the potholes!
Hi Alyce,
Beautiful snapshots! It does looks like a great place to be, but the roads ummm I’d make sure to have a jeep. Have a great day!

I love pictures of Hawaii! And these are gorgeous! I really hope I manage to make it there someday.
How beautiful, maybe worth the horrible ride
Well, it definitely looks like driving that horrible road was worth it. Those are beautiful beaches, even more so without being clogged with tourists
Gorgeous … and it seems worth the bumpy ride!
The color and clarity of that water is just gorgeous!
